Elizabeth Chen, Senior Vice President and General Manager

Elizabeth Chen has 15 years of marketing, business development, and general management experience in biomedical companies, with a track record of building revenues and profits in new ventures. Her general management experience includes overseeing manufacturing, sales and marketing, product development, clinical trials management, finance, quality, and regulatory activities. Ms. Chen has been a senior officer of both public and private companies. She was most recently President and CEO of Marathon Biopharmaceuticals, a contract GMP manufacturer providing microbial fermentation and protein purification services to various pharmaceutical customers. Ms. Chen launched Marathon through a spin out of the process development, manufacturing, and quality assurance departments from a nearby publicly held biotech company. She led the company through its first successful FDA inspection as a multi-client, multi-product facility. Under her leadership Marathon quickly achieved profitability, generating a positive cash flow within just 18 months. Ms. Chen holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University in Psychology and Organizational Behavior and a Master of Business Administration degree from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.


 

Shawn Cain, MS, Vice President, Operations

Shawn Cain has over 15 years experience in the research and development of bioartificial organ systems. His experience includes ELISA development, membrane formulation, device manufacturing, and cell processing. He joined Circe Biomedical's predecessor (W. R. Grace) in 1986. Since then, Mr. Cain made significant contributions to the development of several ELISA systems, a milk-based progesterone diagnostic kit, an LDL-c removal device, the fabrication of the liver assist device, the processing and cryopreservation of cells for the treatment of acute liver failure and devices for the treatment of insulin dependent diabetes. He has co-authored several publications and presentations and has been granted six patents including novel methods to cryopreserve hepatocytes in large volumes, process mammalian cells in a functionally closed system, thaw and elute cells at the clinical site, and a method of processing thawed mammalian cells in a hollow fiber bioreactor. Currently, he is responsible for managing all aspects of manufacturing, materials control, and the operation of Circe's Lexington and swine production facilities. He received his M.S. degree in the Biological Sciences from the University of Massachusetts and a B.S. in Biochemistry from Northeastern University.
